It felt like the tip of her world for Clifton’s Maria De Lourdes Torres. In March, her husband of 40 years, Norman Chidiac, died of COVID-related problems.

Then got here Hurricane Ida. The storm flooded the basement of her Grove Road house and virtually submerged the business constructing on Clifton Avenue that the 73-year-old had invested in with Chidiac, destroying a barber’s store, regulation workplace and pharmacy.

“Every little thing was floating: lawyer’s desks, copiers,” she recalled via sobs in an interview.

Now, Torres says her insurance coverage clams are caught in limbo, due to a scarcity of adjusters to survey the harm. Regardless of a number of calls, her insurer hasn’t stated when one might be out there. Torres says she would not know what to do with the mess Ida left behind.
