“I used to be not searching for a home after I noticed the for-sale signal and the homeowners outdoors stepping into their automobile,” she recollects. “The husband stated I couldn’t see it with out an appointment, however the spouse let me inside, and I purchased it.
“I’ve lived in quite a lot of good properties in lots of cities, however none ever had a particular location like this,” Clark says speaking in regards to the spectacular, 180-degree view of the Mississippi River. “After dwelling right here and having fun with the setting, I would choose a house based mostly on the situation and never the house itself. I like historic properties and rivers.”
Nevertheless, that isn’t to say her residence shouldn’t be particular by itself. “I’m happiest when I’m tearing one thing aside and rebuilding it,” she says, and that’s what she has finished within the 1883 dwelling.

The stairway to the second flooring passes a tropical floral portray on the wall to the correct that Clark painted. On the high of the steps is a sculpture bought from the Venice Café in downtown St. Louis. The artist is Tony Duquette.
She has stuffed the house with artwork, a lot of it her personal and finished in a number of mediums. On the primary flooring six colourful acrylic framed work of orchids brighten one wall, and several other of her images are framed and hung close by. Within the entry corridor her watercolor of an previous doorknob decorates a wall. “I describe all my artwork as ‘hyper-realistic,’” she says noting she likes to color life like photos in a detailed perspective.
At the moment she is engaged on a 3-foot-by-4-foot portray of tropical vegetation that’s so life like it resembles {a photograph}. Close by is an outside scene finished in pastels.
A big picture album in her workplace comprises a exceptional collection of life like Trompe-l’œil paintings she was commissioned to color for various residences and companies. The artwork approach makes use of life like imagery to create the optical phantasm, which depicts objects in three dimensions, though painted on a flat floor.
Whereas Clark loves dwelling a quiet life in Elsah within the village she describes as “the city time forgot,” she additionally enjoys the comfort of the metropolitan St. Louis space. “I’m solely 35 minutes from the airport and 45 minutes from downtown St. Louis,” she remarks.
“I believe a lot of the historic ambiance of Elsah is as a result of we shouldn’t have mailboxes lining the streets. We get our mail on the publish workplace up the road,” she says. “Additionally, your entire village is a historic district listed on the Nationwide Register of Historic Locations, and architectural adjustments should meet strict pointers to protect the character of the village.”
For 25 years the residence had been the Nook Nest Mattress and Breakfast. Her intention was to proceed to make use of it as a residence but in addition listing it on Airbnb and lease out the second flooring. “After I found I may hear the slightest noise upstairs, that lasted just one weekend,” she says. Now one of many upstairs bedrooms has turn into her dwelling workplace, and the opposite an artwork studio with river views.
As a result of her two-story dwelling does sit on the very base of the hill on which Elsah is perched, generally when the Mississippi overflows the banks, the water enters the residence. “The house was constructed anticipating the basement to flood,” she says. “In 2019 the water did rise a couple of inches into the primary flooring. In the course of the Nice Flood of 1993 I perceive it was nearly 4 ft excessive in the lounge.”
However the inconvenience of a flood each from time to time, Clark loves her dwelling and the quaint village. “The place else can you reside that has a Fourth of July parade with extra folks within the parade than are watching alongside the road?”

An upstairs bed room includes a two-panel murals that fills the area behind the mattress. It was finished by an artwork pupil on the Washington College Faculty of High-quality Arts. The classic poster on the correct is a lithograph that portrays Germaine Kerjean, a French movie actress. It was bought 30 years in the past within the Central West Finish and dates to 1934.

The kitchen counter tops have been customized made and put in by Jessie Zimmerman who lives in Elsah. Zimmerman additionally did quite a lot of carpentry work on the house when it was rebuilt after a flood in 2019. The under-the-counter cupboards are Craftsman device chests bought from Lowe’s. Since they’re on rollers, they convert to kitchen islands when crucial.

Clark rewired the classic ceramic lamps over the eating room desk. She says they mix in completely with the view to the Mississippi River, which is unseen to the correct. The classic inexperienced Italian glass vases have been collected over a few years. The eating room desk was left within the dwelling when she bought the residence, and the chairs have been bought on eBay and shipped to St. Louis from Pennsylvania.

Artwork fills the partitions of Barbara Clark’s dwelling. The rug is a sample she fell in love with but it surely didn’t match within the area for her Elsah dwelling till a wall was eliminated. The espresso desk was original from an previous railroad freight cart.
