High Israeli authorized consultants condemn “within the strongest phrases” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, saying it’s unlawful below worldwide regulation and refuting Moscow’s justifications for the offensive.
In an open letter, 21 worldwide regulation consultants name on Israel to “undertake a principled place on the state of affairs in Ukraine, reflective of the long-term group pursuits of worldwide peace and safety.”
The consultants, together with a number of deans of main Israeli regulation faculties, say Russia’s recognition of Luhansk and Donetsk, two areas of jap Ukraine, as impartial republics violates Kyiv’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and has “no authorized validity.”
“Consequently, the Russian Federation can not invoke collective self-defense, pursuant to Article 51 of the UN Constitution, to justify armed intervention in Ukraine on the premise of the ‘request’ by these territories,” the consultants write.
“Moreover, the Russian Federation has no proper of particular person self-defense towards Ukraine, as there was no ongoing or imminent armed assault by Ukraine towards Russia. Claims that Ukraine have to be ‘demilitarized’ don’t give rise to any legitimate proper of self-defense below worldwide regulation,” they add.
